Time is as much an asset as money and property. The quality of time spent working at a job or business will determine our personal achievements. While many people are aware of of "time wasting" activities, low value activities, or "busy work" will also have an impact on our rate of success.
Understanding which activities consume our time while providing little benefit is essential. Taking our efforts to the "next level", require a critical evaluation of our habits. Developing a long term business plan is a good first step. Once your plan is created it will be easier to see which tasks are bringing you closer to your goal and which are not.
In business, the 80/20 rule is a universal concept, and a good ratio to remember. Eighty percent of our profits will come from twenty percent of our customers, and twenty percent of our efforts will result in eighty percent of our success.
The key then is to focus on those tasks which provide the most long term value for ourselves and others. The first "high value" task then will be to create that business plan. Just stating a simple goal of wanting to earn "so many dollars" per year is too general and will not inspire much action.
On the other hand, writing down that goal on the top of the page is a good start. Now we ask ourselves,"How do I intend to earn this income?" Then begin to describe in detail the steps we will need to take to reach that point. Some examples of low value tasks are, checking email more than twice a day, surfing for the next "get rich quick" opportunity, constantly checking page stats or search engine rank.
Some examples of high value tasks are, building a well optimized web page, creating quality content, developing your own information product, tackling the most difficult obstacles first and beating procrastination.
Remember the the most productive time spent will on those most difficult and mundane items. This is called the "grind" and will determine how far you go in any business.
