Self-regulation refers to the ability to focus attention and control behavior. Similarly, self-regulation is focused on the ability of an individual or a child to regulate him or herself through private speech. He must be able comprehend what is asked of him in a given task or situation. The individual must also be able to monitor his behaviors to see if there is coordination with the given task at hand. In doing so, that individual must be able to maintain or avert what he is doing based on his own judgments.

Further, self-regulation is important in school and teachers are the first to acknowledge this. A self regulated student can stay in his designated area and focus on the task given to him by the teachers. He is capable to pay attention when the teacher is discussing or reading aloud without losing the attention focused on the teacher, especially to the learning process the student experiences. Moreover, self-regulation allows the student to be productive, busy accomplishing his lessons even when the teacher is preoccupied with other children. That student is an independent learner because a teacher’s supervision is minimal and yet, the student able to learn more than what is required or taught of him during the day’s lessons.

When does self-regulation starts? Parents can attest to the fact that self-regulation starts even before a child was born. Studies prove that a mother can teach her unborn baby various lessons during conception. This is the reason why mothers are encouraged to sing nursery rhymes, read poems, stories or just to the unborn baby during relaxation period. The unborn baby is a fast-learner individual and self-regulation process starts as early as that period. Moreover, mothers of young babies teach their babies to concentrate on using their flexes in reaching out for their toys, get a firm hold of their nursery bottles when they are being fed and the like. The ability to gain control of the things that surrounds his primal years is itself self-regulation. In addition to this, the baby’s mental power to comprehend and act in accordance to their physical capabilities allows one to take in full control of their speech capabilities or their abilities to communicate with their immediate family members, particularly, the mother.

This mental and physical regulation allows the youngsters to control their emotions at an early age. The bondage of familiar relationship happens during conception with the mother and that strong bond of union between parents and children strengthen the regulation needed for lifetime relationships. The early development of trust, dependability and attachment requires special attention on the part of the parent as this will help the child to ponder this relationship as he or she grows older. When the child’s needs were met, self-regulation follows. One concrete example is during the time the child needs to be fed, he or she asks for attention through crying out loud. When the parent responded to the child’s needs, care is channeled through feeding the baby. As the child learns that when he cries his parents come to him and see what he needs, he will be able to stop crying and express his needs.

Self regulation in child rearing is more of teaching the child how to be self-reliant. One way to help and teach this process is to show and encourage him or her how to act accordingly. This teaching can be made through constant communication or reminders on what is best for him or her, what is good and what is beneficial. Regardless if the child is yet to utter clear words, parents must buy time to positively describe and explain to the child that what he is doing can help him relate his actions to words. The child will soon learn to talk may use “self-talk” to help regulate his behavior. Self-talk is private speech where the child learns to “remind” himself what to do. Hence, children learn to self regulate through the parents’ patience and actions. Practice what you preach is something that required in a household as this is the initial way on how to teach the children how to regulate their behaviors accordingly.
