Lime

This harpoon-like structure, known as a hypostome, has barbs which anchor into the skin. That is one of the main reasons why ticks are so difficult to remove. Lime disease ticks were first reported in people, but later testing proved that they had in fact been introduced into the huma cicle from ticks which had originally come from infected animals. Since then the organisms have been found in many wild and domsticated animals, Dogs being the most infected domestic animals, also horses, cows and cats. There is no doubt that these animals also develop some kind of symptoms similar to human beings which include fever, loss of appetite, heart and kidney problems.

If you are aware that the Lime (lyme) disease Ticks may be prevelent on livestock in any particular area or an an land and lvestock you control or keep, we recommend that as far as possible try to avoid contact with the livestock. Inspect daily for ticks and remove the lime (lyme) ticks if found.

If you suspect that your pets are infected with lime (lyme) ticks Make use of brushes and stand your Pet on light coloured surfaces or clothes to remove them ticks from your pets as soon as they they walk in to your home. Tick repellent and tick control products could help in keeping the disease away from animals. An effective tick control called asPermethrin, sold under many different brand names, can be used for the purpose of tick control. Veterinary assistance is important in selecting safe and effective tick control products and designing a control program for your specific circumsatances.

The diagnosis of lime (Lyme) disease must be based on symptoms and clinical signs, and by ruling out other possible diseases. One must consider that Lime (Lyme) disease is not normally contagious between people or directly from animals to man, however the Lime (lyme) tick (or Deer tick) is the cause of humana Lyme disease. The disease itself if caused by the tick infecting an area of skin in the early stages of the disease. The infection in most cases can be attributed to the removal of the tick where the Head of the tick itself is left embeded under the skin which then later becomes infected and this is the start of Lime (Lyme) disease proper.

There are some methods that are needed to be followed during the removal of ticks. to remove the Lime (Lyme) tick use fine Tweezers with a fine tip. Place the ends of the tweezers as close to the skin as possible, squeeze the tweezers on to the mouth parts of the lYme tick and pull it firmly and steadily backwards until the tick is removed. Any remains of the ticks can be removed at the clinic under the doctor supervision. During the removal of tick never use petroleum jelly, hot match stick, nail polish or other products such as solvents or oils or try to burn the attached tick.

Preserve the tick after removal for identification by the Doctor. It is believed that accurate identification has become very important if you or your animals develop Lime (Lyme) disease symptoms. Once yo have saved the tick for identification you should take it to the doctors and ask for treatment of the infected area. Your doctor should then send the Tick to the appropirate State health department offices who would assist in identifying the ticks. Make sure that you put the ticks in tight closed containers with a small amount of alcohol to preserve it.

Physicians who are well-versed in treating their patients who have Lime (Lyme) disease often use high dosages of long-term antibiotics. Although many Lime (Lyme) patients have had success with long-term antibiotics, many patients being treated with antibiotics have recovered 100% for months or even years only to suffer a relapse at a later date. There are Many alternatives to antibiotics which are sometimes quite compelling, and when conducting research it is clear that members of the "virtual Lyme community" are genuine, highly motivated and sophisticated in their knowledge of the disease, its effects and the array of alternative therapies available.

It must be remembered however by the person recovered from the disease that there is a possible chance of reinfection. There is also now Known to be links with early iscarriages, premature births, still births, birth defects and trans-placental infection of the fetus have been reported in bith animals and Humans. No vaccines are available for human beings, but vaccination for dogs are available. Its better to have a blood test done for both animals as well as Humans if appropriate.
