1. Choose a blade size

Saw blades are very costly - the fewer of them you buy, the happier your wallet will be. If you will eventually will buy a table saw, a radial arm saw, a miter saw, or some assemblage of these saws, select a size and stick with it. While there are a variety of blade sizes available, the most popular and common sizes are 12" and 10". If you stick with the same size blade for all of your different types of saws, you'll be able to share saw blades between your saws. Over time, this will save you a lot of money.

2. Cordless or corded

Battery technology for cordless tools has made remarkable advancements during the course of the last several years. Tools that you would never think would have a cordless option, such as miter and circular saws, now offer cordless models. If you are considering getting a cordless saw and you have, or may someday have, other cordless tools, consider sticking with a single manufacturer/battery system -- that way you can swap batteries amongst your tools. Additional batteries are usually extremely expensive -- it's usually cheaper to purchase a new tool than to purchase additional batteries. If you purchase several tools from the same maker using the same battery systems, you will have additional batteries available to finish your task, this can really increase the amount of work you can get done.

Before deciding to buy a cordless saw, remember that even though cordless technology is very advanced today, there will be limits to the amount of work that can be done in a single session with a cordless saw. If you're a hobbyist or you don't use your saw for long stretches, a cordless saw may be a good solution. But if you are a contractor who will be sawing all day long, you will probably want to skip cordless technology for tools that draw large amounts of power when cutting.

Battery operated saws are also more expensive to purchase and maintain. Your cordless saw may last for 10 or 20 years; but the batteries will not. In addition to the steeper cost up-front of a cordless saw, you can expect to be shelling out more money in the future too as the batteries need to be replaced.

3. Read before you purchase

A saw is a big investment -- they are expensive and they see a lot of use in the typical workshop. Getting the right saw is important and it's also important to avoid purchasing a saw that doesn't work for how you want to use it. Prior to buying a saw, check the web for opinions, rankings, and reviews for the kind of saw you are looking to get. After using a saw for a week or so, you will have an opinion about it. But it's nearly impossible to get the correct feel for a saw just by studying the specifications. When you read the internet for saw reviews and rankings, you will get the opinions of people who have laid hands on the saw and who have an informed opinion. When people have problems with their costly new purchases, they are more than happy to sound off on the subject and warn others away. Let their bad luck save you from getting stuck with the same bad saw.

Before getting any type of large tool, take a close look at the user manual. You can discover a lot about how easy or hard a saw is to use by looking through the manual. If it takes 20 steps and an iterative process to make sure that your table and saw blade are square, you can probably be sure that this will lead to frustration in your future. If you are considering a saw with different cutting configurations, read the user manual to see how much effort is required to adjust the configuration. If the set up is long and not easy to understand, it may be more effort than it is worth and you will just not use your saw this way. Even though it has some great features, if they are too hard to use, you will not use them. So why pay for them? You can run across a lot of these sorts of problems just buy reading the manual before you get it.
