Digital cameras and camcorders, on the other hand, include an extra component that converts picture and sound information into bytes of data; in other words, "1"s and "0"s. This numeric, or digital, data is recorded onto one of a range of versatile digital storage media mainly memory expansion card, for digital cameras, and MiniDV digital cassette tape, Mini DVD, or hard disk drive (HDD) for digital camcorders.
Digital Camera & Camcorder Features
In order to convert incident light into digital data, digital cameras and camcorders employ a "Charge Coupled Device" (CCD), or "Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor" (CMOS), image sensor, and it is the number of individual "pixels", or "picture elements" in this sensor otherwise known as its "resolution" that largely determines the level of detail, and overall quality, of your finished images. The Mustek DV630E model, for example, features a CCD sensor, with a resolution of 6.0 megapixels.
Digital cameras and camcorders usually have a viewfinder, of the type found in their analogue predecessors, but this often accompanied and sometimes replaced by an LCD ("Liquid Crystal Display") screen, or monitor. The LCD monitor which can usually be flipped out, at 90 degrees to the camcorder body, in digital camcorders provides a TTL ("Through The Lens") preview of the photograph, or footage, to be taken, and can be used as an alternative to the viewfinder in awkward situations. It can also be used to access a menu system for controlling the functions of a digital camera or camcorder. LCD screens are typically between 1.5 and 2.5 inches, from corner to corner, diagonally, and many employ TFT ("Thin Film Transistor") technology for bright, clear viewing, even in bright ambient light. The Mustek DV5200 model, for example, features a 1.5 inch, colour TFT LCD screen.
Be warned, however, that the LCD is one component of a digital camera, or camcorder, that is "hungry" for power. Power is usually supplied by rechargeable batteries, and it may be worth investing in an extra set, if you are intending to take pictures, or footage, of critical, "once in a lifetime", events, or if you simply want to prevent a failing battery from curtailing your recording. Lithium ion ("Li-Ion") batteries are becoming the batteries of choice for digital cameras and camcorders.
About Mustek
Mustek Inc., founded in 1988, made its name in the field of scanning technology indeed, it is internationally recognised in that field and has grown to become a world leader in the development and manufacture of digital imaging devices. Its range of digital cameras, camcorders and multifunctional devices represent its commitment to high quality, easy-to-use, but, nevertheless, affordable products.
Conclusion
Digital recording may appear to be a more expensive option, initially, if you consider that the cost digital camera, or camcorder, aside you may need an additional memory expansion card, tapes or disks, probably a rechargeable battery pack, and maybe editing software, and/or a photograph quality printer. The other side of the coin, of course, is that your pictures, and sound, are available almost immediately, with no waiting, and no printing or development costs. You can download digital data to a PC, edit and manipulate it to your heart's content, and distribute it via email, the Internet, a digital picture frame and many other means. |
