Unfortunately, nowadays, security threats from viruses, spyware and so-called "phishing" fraudulent attempts to acquire sensitive financial or personal information, such as credit card details are an ever present danger for anyone who uses a PC with an Internet connection. McAfee PC Protection 2007 provides protection against all of these threats, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, detecting, blocking and removing potential threats, as they arise.
McAfee PC Protection 2007 Features & Benefits
McAfee PC Protection 2007 includes all of the essential elements that you would expect in a comprehensive security package. Firewall protection, inbound and outbound, is provided against viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware and adware. Indeed, the package also detects, and removes existing spyware, and provides further protection, by concealing your presence on the Internet from hackers, so you can surf the Internet, and/or download files, with confidence.
In addition, the package includes other applications, such as a disk defragmenter, and a "Quickclean" utility, which can remove unnecessary, or undesirable, files from your hard drive, and ensure that your PC is healthy, and continues to run smoothly. An automatic backup facility allows you to save critical information, in encrypted form, to your choice of hard disk, optical disk, or USB ("Universal Serial Bus") storage device. Restoration of that information, if necessary, can be accomplished with a single mouse click.
The McAfee SiteAdvisor is a new addition to the McAfee PC Protection 2007 suite, and adds safety ratings based on the results of testing for spam, malware and phishing by McAfee, and incidents reported by the www.hackerwatch.org community to search engine results, or individual websites. Safe websites are designated with a green tick, while a red cross denotes a website of dubious nature. Another new addition, McAfeeX-Ray for Windows, detects "rootkits" techniques used to create "stealth" programs, which are invisible to normal software utilities and other malware, which attempt to "hide" from Windows, and other detection methods. A further new feature, McAfee SystemGuard, is constantly vigilant for specific, abnormal activity that may be indicative of malicious activity, from viruses or spyware, even if a specific virus signature does not exist, explicitly, in the current virus definitions.
McAfee PC Protection 2007 does include many security features, so, as might be expected, its performance for example, during a full system scan is not particularly fast, and the various background processes, which run constantly, may affect the performance of lower specification PCs. The upside of this, of course, is that constant protection against the latest threats is provided, and updates take place frequently, and unobtrusively, with no need for user intervention.
Conclusion
McAfee PC Protection 2007 is a complete PC security package, but, nevertheless, fairly straightforward arguably as straightforward as possible to use, with many functions just one click away from the main Security Centre. Complete beginners may find that fine adjustments are slightly more difficult to make than in some, more basic, packages, but the interface, itself, can be customised to "Basic", or "Advanced", revealing basic, or more sophisticated, tools, as required. Similarly, the system of pop up alert messages, requesting user intervention as to whether a specific action should be allowed, or not, may seem a little obtrusive, at first, but, nonetheless, ensures optimum protection at all times. |
