Then there are the times I could almost swear that my dad or mom or even a close relative or friend was around. It is, of course, a subjective conclusion, so I don’t need to prove it to anyone. I just know that for me it is so.
Thus ran my thoughts on this beautiful, warm sunny day as I sat on my back porch contemplating the mysteries of the universe. Malika was out with a friend and Jonathan had gone to the movies. This was one of those times when you know that there’s so much to do, but you find it much more enjoyable to just sit and be as lazy as possible.I call it “creative procrastination” so that my logical mind would believe I was doing something useful.
Suddenly, in the midst of my moment of leisure, the phone rang.
“Hi, John, it’s been quite a while,” announced the voice of Gideon.
“How are you, my friend?” I asked.
“Oh, fine, just fine. How would you like some company? We’re in the neighborhood.”
“It’ll be great to see you again. And by ‘we,’do you mean Marla is with you?”
“No, not this time. I’m with an old friend I want you to meet,” he said. “We’ll see you shortly.”
For some reason, I was hoping it would be Marla, but I was nevertheless excited that Gideon would be stopping by for a visit. In less time than I could imagine, they arrived. With Gideon was an elegantly groomed man dressed in a dark, business suit.
Gideon introduced us by saying, “John, I’d like you to meet a dear, old friend of mine. This is Matthias. Matthias, meet John.”
“Hi, Matthias,” I said, shaking his hand,“it’s good to meet you. Would you like to come inside or should we relax here on the porch?”
“The porch is fine with me, John,” said Matthias as he and Gideon seated themselves on deck chairs. “Gideon told me that you get many of your creative ideas while sitting back here.”
“Ah, he told you that, did he? And what else has he been telling you?” I laughed.
