Let there be no doubt here that depression is a serious mental illness. It often takes months or even years to cure or manage serious depression, a real mental illness. Each year, millions of people come to the realization that they suffer from depression. Only about a third of them will seek treatment, and that makes it worse.
Most people don't want to be considered crazy, that's understandable, so because depression is considered a mental affliction they avoid diagnosis. Instead of being considered mentally ill, people try to manage the problem themselves. Depression is more common- place than you might think and it will not go away on its own.

In many cases depression is passed on genetically and passed along in the DNA. People who have a strong background of depression in the family are at a higher risk to become depressed themselves. There are even some prescribed medications that can bring on depression. It has been clinically proven that even some high blood pressure medications can cause depression.
A major cause of depression is stress. Stress itself is a complex subject with many different causes. It's not well known, but it's true, that stress can result from the pressures associated with positive events such as a new, high paying job. In these cases it's not the good event causing stress, but fear of the unknown and/or fear of ability to deserve or maintain the positive element. Arguments with family members, disputes with business clients can also cause stress. Just trying to make ends meet is stressful for some people. By determining the cause, medical professionals have a much better chance of administering a treatment.
