There are many customs surrounding Christmas since this is a tradition that passes from generation to generation. Most of the Christmas customs we are familiar with today can be traced to their roots in Germany.

One of the most popular Christmas customs, putting up a Christmas tree, originated in Germany. Other Christmas customs like the giving of gifts, preparing hams during the holidays, and even the popular mistletoe can be traced back as early German practices during Christmas. But some of these practices are not Christian in nature at all. Many historians believe that many of these practices were inherited traditions from German pagan roots.

Other less known Christian customs that survived through all these years include the giving of stamps that depicts Christmas. There are other customs and traditions surrounding Christmas and each nation has its own unique way of celebrating the birth of Christ.

Surprisingly though, some Christian denominations view Christmas not as a Christian holiday but as a pagan holiday since most of its customs that originated in Germany have pagan beginnings. But even these beliefs have not dampened the Christmas spirit that can be felt during this holiday season.

In other parts of the world, Christmas even occurs during summer, which is contrary to the traditional depiction of a white Christmas complete with snow and Yuletide logs. However, despite these differences, people still celebrate their Christmas with passion and happiness. Christmas is not really about the season but but the people and feeling that surrounds it.

Santa Claus is also a big belief during Christmas. He is depicted as the figure who gives gifts to good children during the holidays and those who did not behave well during the year will not get any gifts from him.

The origin of the Santa Claus myth can not be proven for certain. Many people believe and it is actually quite a logical conclusion to note that the concept of Santa Claus came from a bishop named Saint Nicholas who lived around the year four hundred. He is thought to have visited the Middle East and was actually a prisoner in the during the rule of Diocletian. Saint Nicholas was released after the next ruler came to power.

Saint Nicholas was said to be the giver of gifts during his time though he brings these gifts not on December twenty five as is the custom now but on December sixth. Also, this tradition of Santa Claus was not developed until much later, perhaps even as late as the early 20th century.

Today, most especially in the Western world, he is depicted as a joyful and chubby person who gives well-behaved children the gifts that they want. He gives these gifts by sliding through the chimneys, and then he stays for a while to savor the treats that the children left for him.

Santa lives in the North Pole and he stays there until the next Christmas watching whether the children are behaved or not and manufacturing toys until the next holidays in his massive workshop.

The giving of gifts during Christmas is another cherished Christmas customs that has been around for generations. Christmas is also the preferred time for people to share memories with their family and loved ones the tradition of love and charity that is really the true meaning of Christmas, with or without Christmas customs.
