For the most part oily skin is the result of an excessive amount of sebum which is produced by the sebaceous glands which are small glands in the skin which secretes an oily matter called sebum in the hair follicles to lubricate the skin and hair of animals. In humans, they are found in greatest abundance on the face and scalp, though they are distributed throughout all skin area except for on the palms and soles of the feet. When you have too much of this secretion it no longer is a positive and becomes a negative by clogging up your skin pores resulting in accumulation of dead skin cells which then lead to acne and pimples. The basis of oily skin care is the removal of the excess sebum from the skin. Obviously you can't just wash your face off with water and expect something like this to go away. Instead, you need to start with a good cleanser which contains salicylic acid also known as a beta-hydroxy acid that slows the rate of the natural sebum production. Cleansing should be done twice a day (and even more in hot and humid conditions).

For the most part oily skin products are oil free but it's a good idea to read the ingredients beforehand just to make sure. The main thing you want to look for is products that are especially for "oily skin" rather than "normal" or "all skin types". Your skin care routine should be based upon an alcohol based toner which will "dry" the oil up which is why something like this shouldn't be used every single day but anywhere from 1 time between 1-3 weeks. You don't want your skin to be oily but you also don't want it to be dry because then that can lead to all kinds of other problems as well!

Another important type of skin care product you should be looking at, especially if you are going to be using anything with alcohol in it, is a moisturizer product because this will replenish your skin since the alcohol will probably make it a tad dry. If you do decide to include a moisturizer, be sure to use one that is oil-free, wax-free and lipid-free. And lastly, if the "tips" above don't help you out, it's important that you visit a dermatologist for advice and tips on what to do. He or she can even recommend products to you beforehand for oily skin or whatever type of skin you might have like vitamin A creams, retinoid, sulphur creams, etc, which can help counter the problems of oily skin.
