From 2D To 3D - The Video Game World Evolves

Back in the day when computer or gaming console video games first came out, the graphics were a little plain and a maybe a little cheesy compared to what we have today. When video games first came on the scene with gaming consoles like Atari the graphics were what is called 2D. Games like Space Invaders and Asteroids were all done in 2D graphics. There were some games that were experimenting with 3D such as the Battle Zone game, but how many people remember that game. Games like Space Invaders and Asteroids are considered Classics and are still played today.

Aside from the look of the graphics, the difference in 2D and 3D games is that the 2D games could only be used in an up and down and side-to-side fashion. With 3D games you can go up, down, side-to-side, diagonal and even 360 degree turns are possible.

Up until the 1990's games were all created in a 2D fashion until the first 3D game called Wolfenstein 3D came along. This game had a great concept as an interactive game but it also had some pretty cool looking graphics. Wolfenstein 3d pretty much set the standard for all future 3D games to come. 3D games soon took over the gaming industry and were soon immensely popular. It has hard to find a game still available made in 2D.

Some gaming companies thought the transition into 3D graphics would be easier if they used an isometric 2D graphic to compete with the 3D world but most were not too successful. There were design problems, the grids were a bit hard to follow and the looks of the graphics were a bit off as well.

Even games like Pac Man attempted to use a 3D version. Then came games like Zelda and Mario Brothers, these are game series built on 3D graphics. So in essence the graphics are better in 3D, more games are sold these days based on graphics rather than game concept. Do you think games like Grand Theft Auto would be a best seller in 2D, maybe or maybe not.

But it has been said that the problems or rather the issues lie with the creation of these 3D graphic games. The technology is better but is it easier to create a game based on 3D rather than 2D? Of course not but 3D games sell better which makes it more conceivable to use 3D technology than 2D. There are 3 different categories that designers use, the Tile Based Games, games like Civilization. The Single Plane Games are games like Super Mario Brothers and Real World Games like Portal and Super Mario Galaxy.

Tile Games are 2D technology while Single Plane and Real World Games are 3D. If you ask any gamer today what style they want their games to be in they are going to say 3D. Back in the 80's and up to the 90's 2D games were very popular and kids love to play them. Then came along technology and they like playing the games even better.
