Well it's that time of the year and while things economically have changed the retail landscape for the foreseeable future this has been another crazy shopping day! First off a Wal-Mart greater was trampled in Long Island as people rushed to get in and find those oh so important bargains he was killed. This to me is one of the saddest things I have heard in some time.
To all of the people involved I hope you really do feel incredibly ashamed of yourselves. A human life was lost in pursuit of a discount plastic toy, DVD, Dress or maybe a food processor. While so far the details are somewhat sketchy as to exactly what happened I am really saddened by this!
Getting back to black Friday I have always been amazed by the entire phenomenon. Why would anyone want to go to the stores on the same day as the rest of the country? Even if you did find a good deal and I often argue that the deals aren't that great, is it worth the stress and hassle of dealing with these crowds especially if people are getting trampled.
When did consumerism get to this level and why is it so important to buy our children so many gifts each year. I really thought the current economic situation was going to force us all to take stock of our lives and ask the question "do we really need to buy all of these gifts?"
This year our family has decided to cut back in a big way, for many reasons some directly related to how much money is available for our family in the new year and more so because of a change in thinking. Our usual budget for the holidays was around $1,000 for the past 3 years and this year we're going to spend $200 for ourselves on things we really need. We are also going to donate $300 to charity, we haven't decided which one yet, but it will involve our entire family and more so than just giving the money to someone we are going to be involved in the donation.
We have discussed many things, going to a soup kitchen and giving the money along with cooking for any evening. Buying gifts for a needy family, wrapping them and delivering them. We decided to do this for the sole reason that it will make us feel better than buying more for our house. And trust me we really don't need anything more!
I hope our family is one of many that are re-thinking things, not just because of the economy or the whole green shift that is happening but more so because it really is the right thing to do. I am not condoning anyone for buying new things, I have and will do so again. My point is really taking stock of what's important and for us the financial and emotional benefit that we give to some deserving family or individual this year will be returned 3 fold. We will feel much better for doing this than buying more things I assure you, the more I think about it we can't afford not to do this. This is beyond a win, win - this is really essential
Happy holidays and here is hoping this kind of nonsense and the craziness that Black Friday is will continue to lose it's popularity.
