Top Five Weekend Breaks Destination

Let's face it going on holiday is something everybody would like to do on a daily basis, as opposed to waking up in the early hours of the morning for work! Unfortunately this is not possible considering the vast majority of us probably could not afford to do this. However, the odd time out or respite feels much more exciting and one does appreciate short holiday bursts seeing that most weekend breaks abroad are becoming cheaper.

Beach holidays are a popular choice for anyone looking to go for more than a week, however there is no harm in getting the cheapest flight abroad to Lisbon for a long weekend of soaking up the sun. The idea of weekend breaks is to gain some much needed rest and relaxation, but many people can do this without having to lie down on a beach in a warm climate. City breaks are top on the list for a weekend break away, because of the opportunity to explore the area and learn about the city's cultural history.

Some city breaks are more popular during the winter and spring seasons, or during off-peak seasons when there are not very many tourists around. People generally prefer to travel to areas plenty of cultural insight and historical sites to visit. These can be old cities with tour guides or new and bustling cities that have a sneak peak of its history. Below is a list of my own personal top five list based on what I feel are the best places to visit for a weekend.

At number five on my list of popular weekend breaks is Belgrade, Serbia. As hard as it may be to believe that a country that has seen plenty of bloody civil wars, economic downturns and politic upheaval this is a mostly unspoilt place for travellers to visit. One of the most attractive entertainments of this country is their rich foods such as a traditional Gibanitsa - a pastry based cheese and egg dish that is mouth-wateringly more-ish!

Other features include their strong almost pure whisker, otherwise known as Rakiya; this reminds me that one cannot ignore the cheap booze and musical bars - try bar hopping you will never be able to make it to the second the alcohol is devilishly cheap! The friendly locals will keep you happy by pointing out some of the most interesting and historical areas, with some areas still in ruins after the bombings of the 90's.

Number four on my list of breaks away would be on a little known place called Wroclaw, Poland. I must admit upon hearing the name I thought someone was coughing themselves sick, however, I was surprised to hear that it is one of the trendiest and gothic places to see. By Gothis I mean the cobbled streets and architecture, nothing is uniform and everything is artistically chaotic. This is an ideal place for a winter break, though the summer offers a different view of the vibrant nightlife. One place to visit is the Pod Papugami, a bar which offers a unique live entertainment and vintage film memorabilia.

At number three would then be Dublin, Ireland. Ireland is rich with history, famous poets and plays, and of course Guinness! Dublin offers visitors a chance to travel on their tour bus, take a stroll into Phoenix Park or even get a chance to visit the Guinness factory. Not only that one can do a spot of shopping down O'Connell Street or even visit Temple Bar - an area strip by the Liffy where there are bars after bars of live entertainment and great beverages.

Number two on my list is of course Amsterdam. What more can be said that the diverse nightlife it offers, the occasional entertainment from the Red Light District (this of course is often referred to) and plenty of museums to keep you happy. Amsterdam is in fact much more than what the media portray it to be, in that it offers a nice visit into the Anne Frank house, a unique canal ride with great commentary on all of its historical buildings and beautiful Vondel park to which people a free to take a stroll or bike ride into. This city offers much more than a hip place for young people to get 'wasted' in, but a relaxed and urban lifestyle coupled with some educational touring!

At number one would have to be my favourite romantic spot of Venice, Italy. Venice is a place of its own, with no roads for cars and plenty of fine Italian cuisines to sample from. This is of course one of the most relaxed and picturesque places that offer fun canoe rides and opportunities to celebrate romantic moments together. Rialto bridge is certainly a sight for sore eyes, especially during the evening when everything is lit up. One thing that people will notice the number of mask shops, a tradition of Venice and a symbol of their artistic and theatrical musings.
