Travel to other countries is one of the most rewarding experiences anyone can have. By experiencing different histories, cultures and countries, you can better understand and appreciate your own. You expand your own consciousness and creativity by experiencing beautiful and historic places in the world. However, you should always remember that you must always have your own personal safety and that of your traveling companions as your top priority.
Planning holidays or travels is not just about planning an exciting itinerary. It is also about being prepared for possible problems. If an incident should occur, it could definitely make the rest of the holiday miserable. Keep these travel safety tips in mind for a more enjoyable and safer vacation.
Plan ahead. Remember that even at home, airports and bus stations are notorious for pickpockets and robberies. Keep your important travel items, such as your passport, tickets, credit cards and money on your person all times. Several types of holders for these important items are available so that you can literally 'wear' them, either around your waist, or as a leg or neck wallet. Never keep money, cards or wallets in an easily accessed pocket.
Always clearly mark your luggage so it can't be confused with that of other travellers.
Use quality luggage so that you will never worry about your luggage breaking or suddenly springing open. Pack carefully, never putting valuables in your checked luggage, and learn to pack as lightly as possible. Choose clothing that will be serviceable, comfortable and packs well with minimal wrinkling. The less you have to carry, the less you'll have to be concerned with.
When you arrive in your destination, choose your transportation carefully. Check which taxis are the most reliable with a police officer, an airport commissionaire or from the information desk at the airport. Never share taxis with strangers. Avoid public transportation late at night, especially if you are not familiar with your destination. Although some backpackers hitchhike, avoid this as much as possible. Local buses are usually cheap, and much safer. When riding buses, keep your belongings in touch and sight at all times. It's very easy for someone to reach under your seat, and take items you've placed on the floor.
Choose a hotel that is located in a good area. Note the location of the emergency exits and never open your hotel room door to any strangers or invite people you just have met in your hotel room. When leaving the hotel, leave your key at the desk to avoid losing it or having it stolen. Use the hotel room door lock and chain during the night. Most reputable hotels have a safe in which you can place your personal valuables. Use it.
When planning your clothing, choose items that will fit with the local style and customs. The key to traveling safety is by never looking like a tourist. Try to blend in with the public in terms of style. Do not wear expensive or flashy jewelry such as gold necklaces, expensive watches, rings. These will attract the notice of thieves. Never put anything that you can't afford to lose in your pockets or purse. As mentioned above, there are small holders available that you can wear close to your body, either as a neck bag or a waist holder. If you are carrying a purse or camera bag, keep it securely held across your body at all times.
Use your credit card rather than cash, and always keep your eyes on it. Accompany the waiter to the cashier when paying with a credit card; and when checking in to your hotel, don't allow the credit card to be taken out of your sight to be swiped. Dishonest employees can easily make several copies with a credit card copier. When using a credit card, check your account online frequently to see if any unknown charges have been posted, and alert the company immediately if that has happened. Avoid using cash as much as possible, and be discrete when you do use it. If you're visiting a country where cash is more commonly used, carry only small amounts with you.
