The Ghillie suit was a really neat invention, and like most really neat inventions, it was born out of necessity. Almost all inventions come from someone seeing a need for something and then filling that need. Sometimes we tend to take our inventions for granted and expect things from them that, on their own, they cannot deliver.
Such is the case with the Ghillie suit. In the past, hunters, and later, military men were served well by their Ghillie suit. Today, the users of these suits such as hunters and paintballers throw one on and expect it to render them instantly invisible. Not gonna happen.
A Ghillie suit is no different than any other tool. You have to learn to use it. Also, as with any tool, both the tool and the craftsman need to be in good shape. With a poor tool, the best of craftsmen will turn out less than their best work; Even worse, the best of tools in the hands of a poor craftsman will turn out shoddy work.
Learn to use your Ghillie suit. Send your ego out for a break. Admit you're not perfect and ask a friend to help critique your use of the suit. Take the time to see yourself in your suit as your prey will see you. When you look at pictures of people in their Ghillie suits, notice one common trait. They all still hold the basic shape of a man. It is my opinion that too much attention is paid to color patterns and not nearly enough to shape.
When you have your friend critique you in your suit, have them take pictures so that you can see for yourself where your deficiencies lie.We are told that animals cannot distinguish colors. Assume that to be true and try to find a color-blind friend to help. "Veg" out your suit to break up the outline, paying particular attention to the area between the top of your head and the outside of your shoulders. You want a shape more like a bush and less like a gingerbread man.
One thing is certain. If you throw on your Ghillie suit and go prissing into the woods, you will be seen. Learn to use your tools! Once you see the return on a little time and effort spent learning how to make the most effective use of your suit, You will no longer regard that time and effort as a pain in the nether regions, but will instead find yourself constantly looking for more ways to improve.
