When people first think of graduation caps, they might think of the traditional black mortarboards that are flat, sitting on top of a high school or college graduates head. Although this is an example of traditional graduation caps, there are actually several different kinds of graduation caps that can be worn during a ceremony to commemorate the important turning points in a persons life.
Graduation caps can be worn several times during a students career, and depending on the profession that a person chooses, graduation caps are worn during ceremonies throughout a persons life. Beginning with preschool and going all the way through the level of a Ph.D., these graduation caps come in all kinds of different shapes, colors, and styles.
Preschool graduation caps are miniature versions of (usually) the traditional caps that people first think of. When young children have worked hard during their first years of school, graduation caps can acknowledge their efforts during their little graduation ceremony. The preschool graduation caps can include smaller, shorter tassels as well to help little ones feel like big students!
Elementary school graduation caps are usually used for kindergarten graduations, and are just a bit bigger than the preschool graduation caps. There are also middle school graduation caps and gowns, and can be of different qualities, such as thicker, more regal caps and gowns or rental quality graduation caps and gowns. High school graduation caps and gowns of course usually are available to students in the colors that correlate with their high school. While some high schools have their students purchase graduation caps and gowns that they can keep, other high schools work with a company to provide rental graduation caps and gowns. Other schools may even have students rent the gowns and purchase the caps to keep.
Collegiate graduation caps and gowns vary in style depending on the level of degree that students earn. Associates degree students may have a certain color of caps and gowns, while students who earn Bachelors degrees usually can be seen wearing black graduation caps and gowns. Masters degree earners usually wear more fancy gowns with hoods along with their graduation caps. The upper levels of academics, such as Doctorate degrees and Ph.D.s usually wear entirely different looking graduation caps with more lavish robes. These graduation caps are called tams, and come in shapes with 4, 6, or 8 sides. Faculty members who have earned Ph.D.s usually wear tams instead of mortar boards at graduation ceremonies to distinguish themselves from the students.
