When building their homes, many people choose a super sized pantry. Make sure your super sized pantry doesn't increase the chances for a super sized family!
A large pantry can be your enemy if it is stocked with a lot of quick to grab processed snack foods. If you have bags of chips, Fritos and candy, get rid of them. Boxed Twinkies, cookies, muffins and moon pies are not your friends.
A large pantry doesn't need to be jam packed with food.
You can arrange it so it's easier to find what you want if there is less of it. You can use a shelf or two for appliances, paper products, dishes and or storage containers. Then carefully select the healthy items you need to have on hand for meal preparation and pick a spot to store them that is easy to access.
Make sure to buy olive oil which has heart healthy unsaturated fat. Forget the butter, corn oil and Crisco. Place a measuring cup in your pantry for easier measuring of portion sizes for cereal.
Get rid of white rice, pasta and sugar filled cereals.
Replace these with high fiber, whole grain products. These products have more vitamins, minerals and protein. They also often have cancer fighting plant chemicals to keep your healthy. Add your whole grain products to stir fries and salads. These foods are loaded with fiber will keep your hunger satisfied for a longer period of time.
If you can't eliminate tempting treats, at least hide them in the back.
Keep healthier choices up front where they are easier to grab. You may even want to prepackage healthy snacks like a sensible serving of tasty whole grain cereal in a plastic container ready to eat on the go.
Avoid keeping a lot of baking supplies on hand. Including big containers of sugars and white flour. Plan your baking with your health and weight in mind. Don't keep a lot of brownie, cookie and cake mixes on hand. The mixes in a box are really great time savers but you'll lose that time later in life when you don't as long as would have if you ate healthier.
The best way to plan your pantry is around a calorie shifting eating plan. Calorie shifting confuses your body so much that it actually starts burning more calories each day then it would if you were on a low calorie diet. When your body notices that you are eating less, to prevent starving, it starts burning fewer calories. That is why most people can't lose weight on low calorie diets.
