Even some of the most lovable and affectionate dogs will sometimes bite or nip
particularly when frightened or overly excited. This is especially true when
around strangers of a certain body type or smell. Dogs that are consistently
kept indoors and away from strangers and other dogs are at risk for developing
this habit.
Certain breeds of dogs, particularly those bread for hunting are at risk by their
genetics alone. Very large breeds even though seemingly friendly can be
dangerous to children and older people when allowed to get excited and jump
onto them. Proper training is the key to overcoming the tendency to become
over excited.
Social exposure is a good way to make your dog comfortable with different
situations. A training course is an excellent way to not only tame your anxious
dog, but to also make them comfortable around other people and pets. Training
courses and group activities will enhance their temperament and calm their
nerves.
Outdoor activities will help control their energy levels, and reduce fear and
anxiety. Visits to the park are excellent for allowing your dog to experience
different surroundings and other types of animals and people. Not to mention
the health benefits of frequent long walks and play time at the park.
Never tease or antagonize your dog or others even in play. Never provoke your
dog around strangers even as a joke. Actions like these can raise the energy
and the fear level and your dog making them more likely to bite. Never ignore
hostile tendencies and your pet, as one day they may escalate into a serious
incident.
Dogs who are chained and confined to small cages can become hostile when
allowed to run free. Giving them plenty of exercise and activity is recommended
to burn their excess energy. Neutering your dog will also help to reduce the
natural aggression, particularly during mating periods.
Always err on the side of caution, when in doubt consult either a veterinarian or
a professional dog trainer as to your options. Proper care and affection will do
wonders for your pet dogs attitude and temperament. Observe your dog closely
and learn what kind of situations and people cause anxiety in them.
Take an active role in the training and development of your dog as to avoid any
serious incident in the future. Always remember that a happy, healthy and
socially active dog is much less likely to cause harm.
