As if a book from a Chinese antiques shop, the myth of Chairman Mao has classic Communist ideology, in that the dear leader is usually glorified as one with super human powers. Mao Zedong did it from the Long March and through his life, and even in death his body is almost given sacred honors. But several recent academic studies of the glorious leader show defects in his personality and unnecessary that are being written in the West. It is true that in the 1930s era Mao and others led tens of thousands of ragged peasants on a six thousand mile walk.
That Long March had Mao and his Communist soldiers evade Japanese and Nationalist armies, as they gathered support in the countryside and villages by bringing and sharing their own food. Chairman Mao took to writing and his Little Red Book was read by millions. In there is a passage to not steal food from the locals, share what you have if they have nothing. These humane and wise policies had Communist Party and Communist Army members swell. Mao and his Communists stayed away from the Japanese mostly.
Mao felt America was bent on defeating all Japanese power. Instead, the Communists continually attacked and counter attacked fellow Chinese who were part of an army Mao felt was proppsed up and supportive of America. China in turn had taken much advice from Russia after World War Two, and when Mao and his Communists won in 1949, Russia lasted one decade before they were also evicted from China. Too much bully patronizing, China would get great alone. One can note that China became Communist in 1949.
At that point, all Russian advisors were evicted in 1959, Mao's two great disasters began: the Cultural Revolution and Great Leap forward- all defying common sense and science- brought misery and death to millions. Mao died in 1976 and is still revered in the Chinese antiques shop mentality of reverence for elders, even though the right wing of the Communist party reigns supreme. No more back yard furnaces that wasted valuables, now the superport exporter to the world. Mao must be as upset as Joe Stalen at all this democracy and capitalism.
Mao achieved much but it may be his early education in Moscow during a feverishly ideologically driven era. There was only black or white, not nuances of right and wrong. The peasant operated backyard burners melted down many family heirlooms and produced only useless slagg: the furnaces could never reach the heat to become useful solid steel. Mao was ruthless and that is certainly part of why he stayed on top during many powerful struggles to be in charge. Some died in air crashes, some in other manners.
Chinese antiques shop locations in many places will have records and figurines that express this. How you enjoy the irony of such actual events is up to you. Have fun, or at least enlightening enjoyment.
