The game of 7 Card Stud starts out with an ante as opposed to a blind. The ante is made by each player and it is a way of consistently forcing the action. Depending on how much action is desired, antes can be very small or very large relative to the size of a normal bet. Once the ante has been put forth, each player is dealt two cards face down and one card face up, with the player having the worst card showing being forced to make the initial bring in bet. A normal round of betting follows the bring in bet during which players can call, raise or fold.

Once the initial round of betting is complete, the remaining players are dealt a second card face up which is known as fourth street. Another round of betting follows the dealing of fourth street before fifth street is dealt in the form of another face up card to the players that are remaining. Another round of betting follows and another face up card gets dealt afterwards to the remaining players as sixth street before the second last round of betting takes place.

The final street is dealt to each remaining player as a face down card unless there are not enough cards left in the deck to accommodate everyone that is still in the hand (a very rare occurrence but it can happen if a large number of players go a long way in the hand). If this happens, the final street is dealt as a face up card in the centre of the table that acts as a community card for each of the hands that are remaining. A final round of betting happens and if there are still at least two players left in the hand the showdown takes place and the best five card poker hand present takes the pot.

Generally speaking, the game of 7 Card Stud is played by normal 7 Card Stud rules which essentially means that the game is played with a small ante relative to the big bet and a limit betting structure. This means that players can only bet in successive increments of the bet amount being used and it also usually means that the betting is capped at four times the amount of the bet being used. This game can also be played spread limit however, where a range of bets exist and a player can choose any number within that range when they make their bet. Pot limit and no limit 7 Card Stud games are quite rare, but they do exist and tend to drive the action in a big way because of the number of cards in play.
