It's fair to say that ten years ago, you would not have expected to hear the words 'internet' and 'dating' strung in the same sentence. The Internet was something used for business and dating involved old fashioned encounters at the movies. However as email and web surfing steadily became engraved in our day to day lives, the tasks we would normally have conducted in person, such as grocery shopping and dating, suddenly started taking place in this other world known as cyber space. In fact, the latter has since become such a huge success, especially mature dating, that it is changing the way we communicate with the opposite sex today. Where getting to know one another used to involve coffees and restaurants, it now involves a twelve inch monitor screen and a keyboard.
A recent online dating survey found that huge numbers of couples who have built up a significant relationship through e-mail or online chat, have in fact met up with their dates and a whopping ninety four per cent of those went on to see each other again. So is online dating more successful than experiencing the butterflies in person?
The truth is, when a friend sets you up on a date, or worse still, a blind date, how much do you really know about that person? The chances are you'll know very little and if, within an hour of meeting, the conversation dries up and you realise you have little in common, you may be left feeling disappointed that the entire evening was a waste of time. Surely this discomfort could just be avoided by doing your research first and saving yourself the embarrassment of being told in person what you could read on-line?
With online dating, you can discover your date's specifications before even meeting them, such as whether you share similar music tastes and hobbies, if you have similar ambitions, sense of humours and like the same movies. If you are satisfied with what you read, from the comfort of your own home, you can then choose whether you wish to progress with a physical date. It's almost like cutting out the middle man.
You would be mistaken if you believe that online dating specifically targets a certain 'kind' of person. Adults aged eighteen to sixty five and over are logging on to find love. For the more mature, dating online is regarded as a great way to meet other like-minded singles. Perhaps when you are in your twenties and thirties, weekend drinks and social occasions open up the doors for cupid, ready to aim his arrow in your direction.
However as you progress through life and start choosing other ways to spend your leisure time, you may feel your opportunities to socialise with the opposite sex are a little more limited. Mature dating online gives men and women aged over fifty, the chance to become reconnected with similar companions.
For those not familiar with online dating, it's simple. All that is required is for you to log on to one of the many websites available, enter your gender and age and the same again for whoever you are seeking and hit the Search button. Your search can be totally anonymous and you will only be required to enter your details if you wish to register and get in touch with others.
Many websites also give you the option to search by country. Unless you have all the time in the world and a bottomless bank fund, then you don't get too many opportunities to meet so many men and women from around the world. If you decide you would like to meet a European partner, American or Asian for example, you simple select the country and open up the door to a whole new set of connections.
With six million people registering with online dating agencies a year in the UK alone, there are clearly many like-minded adults around the country, of similar age and with similar interests also looking for someone special.
