If you are interested in saltwater fishing you will need the appropriate tackle. This article is for beginners to who are clueless about what kind of tackle they will need. The best way to learn what kind of fishing tackle you will need would be to have someone to show you, the next would be to keep reading if that is not an option.
When fishing it all starts with the fishing rod, now for a beginner, I would recommend a light rod, something cheap, with a spinning reel. Since this is probably new to you, I would look for one that is already put together for you. The combo rod and reels are already assembled to work good together, and they usually come with line on them, one less thing you will have to worry about.
Once you get the fishing rod and reel and have it assembled, the next thing you will need to do is put some fishing line on it, if applicable. Every type of reel is made for a certain resistance of fishing line, this is measured in pound test. If you have a light rod and reel combo I would recommend anywhere from8 to 12 pound test.
With a spinning reel the fishing line is quite easy to put on, just a tie a fisherman knot around the spool, send it through the closed bail and start reeling away. Be careful not to get the line tangled in the process. The slower you reel the line on the spool the less likely you will have a birds nest.
Next step is to send the fishing line through the top eye on the fishing pole, and you will want to attach a leader line. A leader line is typically 3 to 5 times stronger than the line you have on your reel. It greatly aids in the line being snapped when you have a tough fighting fish on by increasing the breaking strength. There are leaders made out of wire, monofilament, and other combinations.
The leader line can be connected two ways, by wither tying both of the lines together in a blood knot or similar know, or a swivel. The leader line is also used to hold weights such as split shots, eggs and pyramids, depending on where you are fishing will determine what kind of weight you will need on the leader line. It is always good to have a big variety of weights in your tackle box for any given situation.
Next is the fishing hook, there are a few types of fishing hooks that you can use. The basics are the barbed j hook, circle hook, and the treble hook. The barb on the J hook is designed to sink into the fishes lip and not come out, they are illegal to use in some places, not many though. Circle hooks provide better hooking than the J barbed hooks, and they are self setting which means when a fish bites they are probably hooked for good.
Then there is the treble hook, which consists of three hooks on one, and these can be used singly, but are very commonly found on many saltwater fishing lures. A lure is a artificial bait that tries to mimic a type of bait fish. They come in all different shapes, sizes and colors, and they are made trick the fish into thinking that its real bait. They require a bit of skill to use but work great once you learn how to use them correctly.
One more thing that goes on the leader line in some cases are floats, or as I call them corks. Most of them are made out of Styrofoam, and they are usually place a foot or two on the leader line from the hook. They float on the water, and will help you see when a fish is nibbling on your bait, when the cork goes under that usually means you have a fish on and its time to set the hook.
That is the basic set up of fishing tackle that you will need to catch some fish. Some other necessities would be a tackle box to keep all of you tackle in. You will need storage for all of the terminal tackle mentioned above, and depending where you are fishing and what you are fishing for you will have to use many different set ups on the leader line. |
