Americans spend more than $82 billion each year on clothing. Many of us spend more than we'd like to admit. These 6 clothing care tips will help you extend the life of your clothing which will keep you looking sharp and may even save you a trip or two to the mall. Check out my site for even more great tips!

* Iron at the correct temperature. Fabrics for men's clothing and women's clothing are often different. Make sure you heat the iron to the correct temperature before using and begin with the clothing that requires the cooler setting first; the results will be much better. Always iron along the seams. Think about how the piece was sewn together and work each one separately. And take your front pockets and back pockets out before ironing to avoid ironing in a pocket image into your fabric. Make sure to use the right amount of starch. Too much starch can cause scorching and the dreaded "cardboard" effect.

* Wash darks in cold water. Hot water bleeds the dye out of fabrics. The colder and shorter the better. Turning your jeans and dark clothing inside out will help them last much longer. You can also buy special detergents designed to keep the blacks black and the blues blue.

* Dry clean dry clean only products. The first rule of dry clean only products is to dry clean dry clean only products. The second rule of dry clean only products is to DRY CLEAN DRY CLEAN ONLY PRODUCTS.

* Use the right products. Collar stays, lint rollers, shoe horns, wardrobe valets, wooden hangers, shoe racks and chair valets are all examples of products that will keep your clothes, clean, straight, organized and looking great.

* Avoid hanging shirts, jackets or coats by the collar. Even if it's convenient, don't be tempted to use a coat hook or coat rack. Whenever possible, use a plastic hanger, wooden hanger or valet for your shirts, jackets and coats.

* Keep perfume, cologne, hair spray, deodorant and wax at bay. Let your deodorant dry before putting on a shirt or sweater. Don't spray hairspray after dressing, it will stain your clothes. Perfume and cologne will also stain your clothes, especially cashmere, so spray it on you before you dress. If you wear pomade or hair wax, dress first. This way it won't smear across your clothing as you dress.
