Finding Your Perfect Hiking Boot

The difference between a well-fitting hiking boot and a poor one is the difference between an enjoyable hike and a vow to never hike again. As one who has re-soled some old friends, I refused to part with my companions of hundreds of miles just because of torn seams. I can attest to the importance of finding the right fit. These pointers should help:

1- Prepare before you go to the store. Because feet tend to swell while hiking, simulate that by going for a 20-minute walk before a boot fitting. Late afternoon is also the best time to fit for this same reason.

2- Determine your level of hiking. This dictates the weight of boot you'll need from flexible lightweight boots for the easy day-hiker to heavy-duty leather for the serious backpacker.

3- Socks are important. Fit your boots with the socks you intend to hike in. They have to wick away moisture and provide warmth and comfort.

4- If there is a trained boot-fitter at the store, utilize his/her expertise. They can determine the volume and shape of your foot and direct you to the right boots.

5- Try on several pairs. Be sure to have time enough to do this. Comparing your options will only strengthen your conviction for the right pair.

6- It may not be your usual shoe size. Try this method: with both boots on, unlaced, push your foot forward in the boot until your toes touch the end. If you can slip your finger in behind your heel, the size should be correct. Err on the larger half-size.

7- The heel should not move up and down. Make sure the boot's heel padding matches your heel. There should be no movement. Movement equals blisters. Blisters equals misery.

8- Make sure toes are not cramped. Toes need some wiggle room and allowance for circulation, or cold toes could result.

9- Walk down a ramp. Make sure your toes do not cram the front or the top of the boot.

10- Make sure you don't feel any pressure points - places where boot and foot are too close. Some people try on a boot barefoot to really feel for those hidden trouble spots.

11- Do a walking test thoroughly. Don't just walk the aisle, unless you feel something amiss right away. Ask if you can walk down the mall a ways.

There is nothing like the bond you make with a well-chosen pair of boots. That relationship should last for many years, with each of you taking good care of the other.
