Tutors are in demand in most every type of subject, including hobbies, skills, talents, sports, and academics. Most tutors who start a tutoring business run it from their home when possible. Students simply go to the tutor's home for lessons. Some tutors go to their students' homes for lessons or to their school or sports facility for sports coaching, realizing they can charge more for this convenience.

Due to the high expectations of students in elementary school, middle school, and high school, academic tutoring is in great demand. Today, high school students are expected to learn academics previously considered college level material. Overcrowding in classrooms also adds to the need for tutors as many students do not receive the individual attention they need. Some students are inadequately prepared for college admissions testing, making parents turn to tutors for help.

Some tutors start a tutoring business and offer small group classes in addition to private tutoring lessons. Many students learn better in private lessons since they do not have the distraction or pressures of group learning. Tutors should adapt their teaching to suit the needs of their students.

Parents typically pay for tutoring, but a rapidly expanding field of academic tutoring is now funded under federal law for students with learning disabilities attending public schools and for those falling behind qualifying under the "No Child Left Behind" federal act. While the federal government in these instances may subsidize tutoring, the tutors who start a tutoring business must have college credentials to qualify for payment.

Tutoring does not have to be all about academics. Tutors can start a tutoring business to teach anything in which they are skilled. Other popular tutoring subjects include singing, dancing, cooking, acting, writing, sewing, karate, modeling, guitar, piano, drawing, painting, swimming, computer skills, and even coaching in sports like baseball, golf, and tennis. If you are skilled and/or degreed in any subject someone wants to learn, you could be a tutor.

Tutors who start a tutoring business specializing in academics tutoring do not usually need a lot of equipment outside of books or basic materials. Those who tutor sports or other hobby or talent subjects may need to provide specialty equipment for adequate teaching. For example, the best place for tennis lessons is on a tennis court. If a tennis tutor does not have a tennis court, they will need to arrange to rent one for lessons. Sometimes students may have the perfect equipment in their own homes. For instance, a cooking tutor may choose to visit a student's home for lessons in the student's own kitchen.
