How do you choose a paper to print your invites on? With the overwhelming abundance of options available, it's not easy. I've selected a few of my favorites, and added some tips on how they look and what kind of feel the lend to the invitations.
1. For a classic look, you can either pick a nice, plain heavy cardstock and do the layout yourself in a program like Word, Photoshop or Illustrator (my favorite). Or order cards with a design already on them and just add your own wording. Many online card companies have templates for you to download, taking most of the guesswork out of where the text should go, etc. A few even have the whole design available as a download, making it even easier to print beautiful, professional looking invites at home. You just download, change the wording, print and trim. And once you've paid for the file (usually they're very reasonable), you can use it as much as you like. A fantastic idea if you ask me!
2. Vellum is an elegant choice, and you can either print on the vellum and attach it to a plain, colored or pattered background, or print on the card stock and attach the vellum in front. Maybe printed with something like your names and an ampersand in large letters in the middle, or a photo of the two of you.
3. Handmade papers are gorgeous and come in solid colors, or with flower petals and leaves embedded. They add a nice, rustic feel to the invite, perfect for an outdoor wedding, maybe at a beach, vineyard, or in a tree house.
4. Parchment paper, with the appearance of an historical document, gives your invitations a traditional look. Consider using these with a vellum overlay for maximum impact.
5. Linen cardstock looks like, well, linen, and is slightly textured. It's a great choice for invitations and gives them a tasteful, sophisticated feel.
6. Recycled papers are smooth but with visible fibers and are a great, increasingly popular choice as we are all becoming more aware of our impact on the environment. Invite Site is my absolute favorite for recycled invitations - their products are fabulous.
7. Metallic and pearlescent papers come in many colors and shapes, and add a modern, glamorous feel to the invitation. Just make sure before you buy that your printer is compatible with them. Many only work with laser printers, and ink from an inkjet will never dry, just smear all over the paper. Paper And More has a few that work with inkjet printers (as well as tons of other great papers).
Making sure that the paper you choose is compatible with your printer is of course essential for any paper. Call customer service and ask about your specific printer, and to be absolutely sure, ask if you can have a sample sent to you to try it out before placing an order. |
