Many people simply don't have a lot of time to cook. That's right, they live very full lives and have loads of other things to do. Between school and after school activities, work schedules, church, family outings, and all the other things we find ourselves in from day to day, sometimes fast food is their only alternative in the midst of a busy day.
Oftentimes it's not a matter of cooking itself, even if you really like to cook (which many people do not), but rather of coming up with dinner ideas for quick, healthy, inexpensive meals for the whole family. This can be much easier than people make it out to be. With the Internet, cooking shows, and food demonstrations that happen daily at your local supermarkets, it's now easier than ever to plan a whole week of meals.
Many people who have trouble with this, however, they must not be paying too much attention. An American favorite is the simple corn dog. While a little on the unhealthy side, it's quick and good to eat and kids simply love these. Coat the hot dogs with batter made of flour, corn meal, milk, salt, sugar and baking powder, then fry them until golden brown and dry them off on a paper towel. If you want to mimic the feel of your local county fair, insert a popsicle stick into one end and you're ready to go. This would be a great idea for a picnic food too or maybe even a county fair themed meal that you might have out in your own backyard with your family and friends.
Way back when, in colonial times, dinner was an afternoon meal, followed by a later light meal called supper. Social status and job type dictated changes in this over time. People who performed manual labor continued with the tradition of dinner to keep up their energy. Dinner has changed to become the anchor meal for most families, and a transition between work and school and preparing for a night of sleep. Afternoon dinner helped those with physical jobs make it through the later part of the day.
But now dinner has become the sole evening meal, the anchor to the family and transition from the work of the day to winding down at night. The meaning of supper and dinner have merged. The late meal can be light especially for people who are weight conscious and watching their waist lines. Go the traditional dinner route with a light soup or roast chicken salad.
Busy schedules and crock pots were made for each other. Try crock pot cooking and you'll agree. Set it up in the morning, forget it, then enjoy a great meal at night. Great food is possible in a crock pot, the entire meal too. Cook a roast with some cut up potatoes and carrots. Serve it with a fresh baked loaf of bread picked up on the way home from the local supermarket. You can also let the bread slide if you're worried about the waist line.
Excellent home cooking isn't all that hard. The various meal possibilities are simply endless with simple but delicious meals like veal cutlets, pork chops, even steaks on the grill.
