Playing a Shaman class character in World of Warcraft PvP is incredible fun because of all the things they can do in combat. Whether it is throwing down an armful of offensive and defensive totems, or slicing their opponent to ribbons using Windfury, Shaman can do it all, with style and power. But all those abilities mean there's a real learning curve if you want to play a Shaman in PvP.
The big issue with playing a Shaman is all those totems. They are the class's unique source of strength, but also their Achilles heel. The Shaman class has multiple different elemental specs with more than 30 different totems between them. And you can find good uses for many of them in PvP combat.
For example, the Grounding Totem which disrupts attacks while Earthshock interrupts them. And Poison Cleanse removes poisons as they are cast (very handy against Rogues). Depending on which totem your Shaman uses, they can dispel attacks, defang Rogues by keeping them out of combat, absorb the Warrior's Intercept ability, and slow a Hunter long enough to hit him. There are totems that are effective in virtually any situation.
The key to success as a Shaman in PvP is clearly learning when and how and which totems to use in any situation. While there are many totems available to use, a Shaman can only create so many totems so fast. Plus the amount of mana available to do so isn't infinite. If you don't know which totem to cast when, and how to keep them up and functioning while using mana efficiently, your Shaman will run out of totems before they run out of enemies. Then things get real ugly, real fast.
