Depending on the rules of the location you choose for your reception, if you are allowed to bring in your own alcoholic beverages you can have a Bring Your Own Booze event, which you can denote on the invitation as BYOB. By buying wine kits, you can save money by making and bottling your own wine for the toasts at the table.
You don't need to go to any great expense in the cost of the wedding cake, either. If you make your own cakes, you can rent cake pans for wedding cakes at a very cheap cost. Make the cakes you need and bring these to the bakery to be decorated. You can make them well in advance and freeze them. The decorations and stands to keep the layers in place are very inexpensive and are readily available at dollar stores. You can also buy your decorations at these locations too and save a lot of money.
