Whether you are looking inside a rather spectacularly loose diamond with your new fancy magnifying glass known as a loupe, or merely checking the latest bundle of gemstones some dear friends brought back from some distant place, there can always something going on around the home. Diamonds, as example, were somehow violently ejected from the bowels of fireish hell, until they shot up to the surface of the earth. The first known diamonds came from India, and even today India has the largest market and supply of diamonds.
The make of the diamond tells of how it has been handled and treated in the hands of humans. Consider that a large unnatural lump of rock can be shaped and polished into a magnificent gem. Thus it is in the eye and the steady hand of the cutter to make that raw piece of glistening stone into a magnificent gemstone or diamond. The shape of the diamond may affect the personality of the stone, but it is the overall cutting that unleases the pure beauty of the stone.
And that is known as the make of the diamond. One must learn how to have a good make in the world of diamonds. You can have the good taste to not create a broad flat diamond face with a stubby Pavilion, and no Culet worthy of note. This would be to have yourself dismissed as not a serious collector, taken to tricks with his diamonds. In contrast reputation in diamonds and gemstones has always been built gradually and carefully. It is possible in too many ways distor the gem.
A central question is how do you know if a stone was cut well. The more precise the cutter at the time of the cutting, can be shown in the range of difficulty in cutting. There are several cutting styles used for faceted stones: brilliant cut, step cut as see in emerald cut stones, and mixed cut, which combines either style. Which ever faceting method is used, if you follow some general guidelines for looking at faceted gemstones, you can determine both the quality of the stone and the quality of the cut.
By following some general guidelines you can more realize that both the quality of the stone and the cut. Remember if the original gemstone was of good quality, the way it is cut will make the difference beteen a dull, lifeless stone and a beautiful brilliant gemstone. The thing to remember is how to look at a gem. You must see its total make, especially if it is still a gem not yet cut. There destiny awaits. Again it is important to keep clean all portions of the diamond or gemstone.
Remember, the largest exposure is the top, the table. The Crown covers all down the to the widest portion, the Girdle. From the Girdle the stone recedes into the Culet, which may also contain damaged pieces of the grander stone above the Crown. Enjoy your gems.
