Arguably the most popular video game character in history, Mario is the protagonist of the best selling video game series of all time. Nintendo's lucky mascot, this short and pudgy guy has appeared in a plethora of video games over time.
Created by Shigeru Miyamoto, Mario has spawned more than 200 video game titles till date. A true legend and a life like character, Mario has explored all genres in gaming like racing, puzzles, action, adventure and role playing.
As per Shigeru's design, Mario is a short, Italian plumber who lives in the Mushroom Kingdom. A hero in the eyes of the people, he is the simpleton who stands between the vicious King Bowser and Princess Peach, the queen of Mushroom Kingdom. For taking over the Mushroom Kingdom, the evil King keeps planning the kidnap of the princess but is thwarted by Mario everytime. He is someone with a high spirit, enthusiasm, cheeky personality and physical agility, enough to attract the princess of Mushroom Kingdom. Helped by his brother Luigi in his adventures, Mario is dedicated to the safety of his kingdom and Princess Peach.
The legacy of Mario came into being in 1981, with the launch of Donkey Kong, where he played the role of Jumpman. In 1982, he starred as the villain of the game Donkey Kong Junior, in whose end he is knocked out. His sole venture as the protagonist started in 1983, in the highly successful game Mario Bros. It also introduced Luigi, his younger brother. The game was a big hit, and it was followed by another super hit, Super Mario Bros. which was designed for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Mario has been so successful in his endeavors that till day, more than 200 million copies of the red plumber have been sold. The most successful game of the series is Super Mario Bros. 3, which sold around 18 million copies. Apart from all these, Mario has not been limited to a few genres. His adventures and appearances have also included games like Mike Tyson's Punch Out, where he pays a refree. The Super Smash Bros series has also turned out well, with Mario proving his mettle in cross platform games.
His first venture in the role playing games department was Super Mario RPG for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Its immense success was followed by five more RPG titles, each of which generated decent amount of interest. For the sports genre, he ventured out in Super Mario Strikers and Mario Superstar Baseball. Super Mario Kart, the game which introduced Mario to the racing genre still holds strong today.
The legend of Mario cannot be limited to the few games listed above. He is truly a masterpiece of a character, who has spawned so many titles on his own, that could not have been done by any other mascot. No matter how many memorable game characters our industry might offer us, someone like Mario cannot be forgotten, even by generations which will follow us. |
