The journey of our short hero has been a long one. He has achieved accolades, broken records and has nearly 200 million sales to his credit. Awarded as the best selling video game series of all time, Mario has made his way into the Hollywood Wax Museum, a real honor to virtual and real characters both. His popularity has been rivaled by only one character, Sega's mascot Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic the Hedgehog games have been the closest competitors of the Mario series, and both have walked the Walk of Game as firsts.
Over the previous years, Mario's popularity has skyrocketed and in a survey, Mario was regarded as more recognizable than Mickey Mouse. Sine his birth, Mario has starred in various television series, comics and movies. He has endorsed shampoos, cereals, badges and has been starring in commercials for various companies. Mario and accompanying character's toys were a real age in the previous years. Apart from the above, Mario also starred in an anime which was limited to a Japanese release. An animated series named as Super Mario Bros Super Show showed live action skits of Mario and Luigi by former WF stars. The success of the above media led to the release of a book series named as Nintendo Adventure Books and of lately, an opera was written for Mario and released as The Mario Opera in California Institute of Arts.
Mario has also ventured into the music field, with the theme music of Super Mario Bros being very popular. Various stars of the sports arena were referred to as Mario, because of their exceptional skills in their sports. Some notable names are Mario Lemieux, Mario Williams, Mario Cipollini, Mario Basler and Mario Jardel. Charles Martinet is the person behind the voices of Mario and other important characters in various Mario spin offs.
One of the important media appearances of Mario was in the not so successful movie Super Mario Bros. Picking up from the famous game, the film followed Mario and Luigi in their inter-dimensional adventures. The movie failed to generate much interest and was considered as a big failure in terms of collections at the box office. The most ardent fans of the video game series did not like the idea of the game because it had very little relevance with the actual game. On the contrary, it unsettled various established facts about Mario, like his Italian background. The movie showed Mario being a resident of Brooklyn in New York.
There were a couple of relationships in the game and references to the actual game, but most of them were barely noticeable. Like the Devo Gun, Mushroom Kingdom, Stomper Boots etc. Overall, the game gave nothing to the long time fans of the Mario world, and proved to be a flop because of the feeble plot and poor fun quotient. |
