It does not take a rocket scientist or a marine biologist to realize the extreme way our water life is being affected by pollution. It is not only taking place in our country, but all over the entire world. There are rivers in the United States that have gotten so bad that certain areas of them are no longer safe to fish or to swim in. Even the oceans, as large as they are, are beginning to see the effects that world wide trash dumping and pollution are having of the water life.

The land along the rivers in the United States used to be so beautiful to walk along. Today, even in a lot of remote areas, you can not usually go ten feet without seeing debris and trash of some kind. Old tires, metal cans, foam products, even an occasional old appliance is not that uncommon. In rural areas sometimes people will dump their home garbage near the rivers to avoid taking it to a proper dump site.

Even in rivers that do not look that dirty you can see signs of what pollution that comes down stream in the water can do. It is becoming more and more common to catch fish that have knots or other deformities on them. Frogs are affected as well. When you go fishing and pull out one of those that have these strange looking tumors or deformities then you can see first hand the damage that is being done.

Although new laws against polluting have been put in place in many places and clean up processes have begun, it will take many years to undo the pollution that has already taken place. That is, if it can be completely undone which is not very realistic while any polluting at all continues and it does.

The oceans of our world have also become a huge dumping ground for trash. Why can people not realize that they are not getting rid of it like we do with recycling, but it is only being hidden to resurface later? We must start taking recycling seriously to help us deal with the enormous amount of trash that we create. Industries must become more responsible with the chemicals and other by products that are allowed to escape into our water and our air. If we looked at our water supply the world over as just one gallon jug full, we could realize that once it is filthy and unfit to drink or use, there simply is not any more to be had.
