Malicious Software is not something that you want to hear when discussing your computer security system. Better known to most as Malware, this can be any program that is initially designed to cause harm to a computer, website, or blog. Everything from Viruses, Adware, Spyware, Trojans, Pop-Ups, and even Spam can be considered Malware. Depending on what you are expecting you may be disappointed after you download that cool new software program that shows up attached to an email.
Adware
The two main types of Adware are applications that are supported through advertising and then the more dangerous kind. Advertising support programs can be a useful utility given to you for free, using the advertising to generate revenue for research and development. It may be an ad, an audio, or even a video. You will not be required to watch or listen, but if you do there will be ads within the content. This type of advertising is very popular today in internet programming.
The other type of adware monitors buying and browsing habits and then delivers targeted advertising to your inbox or favorite website. This type of program can be considered a type of spyware if it is installed without you knowing about it, or giving your permission to install it. It will also sometimes show up in an email, before opening or downloading anything that is attached to an email be sure you trust the sender.
Spyware
The term Spyware is used for programs that are installed on a personal computer with the intention of intercepting or taking partial control over the interaction between user and computer. From monitoring the users browsing habits, redirecting your browser to advertising sites, and tracking the sites you visit.
This type of software usually comes without the users consent, often being a part of another piece of software or script that requires you to install spyware as part of the package. There are some well known file sharing utilities that have been suspected of this practice for a long time. Usually there is mention of its inclusion in the user's agreement, but there is no option of not installing it if you continue to use the main program.
These applications gather information about web browsing habits so that a more targeted advertising can be given to the end user. Targeted advertising was designed to be presented to the demographic profile of the targeted consumer, which have been chosen by studying their browsing and buying tendencies. They are often picked by their age, gender, annual income, and visited sites.
Many people find spyware annoying and intrusive, however advertisers say that it enhances their customer offerings and provides the best way to deliver the product. While this on going battle will not end anytime soon, it pays to be wary of who, what, when and how if dealing with this type of Malware.
