Is it Stress, Or Just Life?

All of us face challenges and problems in our day to day lives, whether work related, family issues, or simply the noisy neighbors. We each react differently to these challenges, but for some of us the pressure can mount and eventually lead to stress. For those of us who struggle with stress, the effect that it can have on our minds and bodies is very serious and it's vital to find a solution.

Now to be clear, stress is not always dangerous or even a cause of minor concern. Stress is a tough term to define accurately, because some people may consider a situation stressful while others would barely notice anything at all. The key thing to understand is that when anxiety and pressure become unbearable for a given person, then it's not life -- it's stress, and it should be addressed. It's irrelevant whether or not your spouse, boss, or tennis partner think you're stressed; only you can know for sure.

For many people work is a cause of stress. Too much work may be demanded in too short a time, or the job may be inherently stressful. In a changing economy, the fear of losing a job may color ones entire work environment. If work colleagues are thoughtless or abusive then an otherwise enjoyable job can become a torment. The problem can be exacerbated by an inability to separate work from home life, allowing the tensions of the workplace to spill over into family relationships.

Or of course, family may be the source of ones stress. If a relationship with either a spouse or a child is difficult it can be very hard to focus on the happy moments at home; instead, every interaction is colored by the negativity and doubt of that dysfunctional relationship. Once again, the point at which disagreements and other normal family behavior becomes stressful will be different for each of us.

For single people searching for a spouse, social situations can be fraught with tension and anxiety; what irony to have even ones leisure activities become a source of stress rather than relaxation. If one is constantly focused on presenting a picture perfect appearance, on being witty and personable, then a quiet night out with friends is no longer a chance to recharge but instead a potential encounter with ones life partner!

It's necessary to recognize the difference between normal and abnormal stress. When life becomes too stressful for you to function effectively, it's time to look for help. It is possible to lessen the pressure around you, to find methods of stress relief that allow you to create a healthier balance and a happier life.

For some people the answer may be as simple as a short vacation, a few early nights, or a meaningful and relaxing evening with a loved one. For others, deeper and more fundamental steps may be necessary to rebuild a life that has become unhappy and unfulfilling.
