When I first met my husband he told me that he was a hunter. He likes hunting waterfowl, upland birds and other game. His dog was a Labrador retriever and he trained him a lot. As we started seeing more of each other I started to learn how to train dogs and found that I have a natural talent to work with animals. He told me that he was going to go deer hunting only a few months after we have been dating. I questioned this since deer hunting season was still two months away. He told me that he was into archery hunting and that the season started two months earlier than the gun season. I had heard of archery hunting, but I never knew someone that was practicing it. I was about to enter into a whole new world of hunting.
I did not see him get ready for hunting during the year we were dating. I just noticed that We did not spend as much time together on the weekends since he was out hunting. I discovered the preparation that goes into bow hunting once we were married. To begin with the the clothes he wear is completely camouflage. My husband insists that the clothing be washed with no detergents and it has to hang outside for a few days so there would be no household odors on it. The reason for this is that with archery hunting you must get really close to the animal being shot at. Next, he practiced shooting arrows into a large target that was shaped like a deer. This was to improve his accuracy at various distances. Also he placed a portable stand in a tree so that he can quietly sit and wish for a deer to walk close enough to be shot. He told me that there (exists|is} a procedure called still hunting in which the hunter is on the ground, but in the early season when there is still many leaves on the trees, the tree stand is a much preferable technique of hunting.
I was really surprised at the amount of time to prepare and the force that is necessary to pull back the strings on the bow. After a few years I have come to admire archery hunting and the persons that do it. It is much more of a sport that utilising a rifle to shoot a deer. The animal must be close and the shot must be really precise. My husband has shot a few deer and two black bears with his bow. It is more work and more time consuming, but it is an activity that he loves.
