Marriage is the holy union of two individuals as well as their families. But a long lasting marriage is the union of values, ideas, morals and principles of two individuals as well as the families.
Marriage is not about just two persons living together but it is about how well you can adjust as a person to another personality. To make marriage in the initial years you need to understand the other persons view points and be patient with the other person. In fact in the initial years there will be a lot of situations where things can go out of hand and can result in fight and quarrels. It is these situations that you need to monitor carefully and make sure that you keep you cool and do not take aggressive stance.
Another major factor to consider is that you should not try to change the other person. The key is to understand the other person and adjust not change. It is not easy to change somebody's personality at an age where over the years all the habits have been baked into the personality. If both the partners can understand this golden rule the marriage will not have any problems.
After the initial years generally the marriage foundation will be strong as now you know the likes and dislikes and the nature of the other person. Also after the initial years you will have now seen good and bad times together so the bond will be stronger than ever.
Trust is another key factor to marriage. Nothing can replace that trust and you need to trust the partner in all good faith. If do not have trust in the other person then you need to evaluate the reason as to why it is not and then correct the reason or confront the other person.
Then there is recourse to the marriage counselor. Do not hesitate to seek outside help generally a professional as that can give a new perspective to your thoughts which you were not aware of. Most of the times the counselor will help you get over tiny or trivial matter which are bothering you about the other person. Sometimes you get engrossed in thinking yourself as right that you can actually neglect the other person's thoughts and opinions.
Remember it takes two to tango to make marriage work. So be patient and things will work smoothly and will make your marriage long lasting.
