Have you been wondering how to build a telescope? Building a telescope is a fulfilling thing to do. Not only can you take great pleasure in building a telescope, but you also get the added advantage of being able to view the heavens with your own homemade telescope. Building a telescope is not the easiest thing to do. Luckily you don't have to build everything. In fact, you can decide how much time and effort you want to invest, when you build a telescope.
If we look at how to build a telescope, the easiest way to go about building a telescope for backyard astronomy, is to build a reflecting telescope. This kind of telescope will be much easier, than trying to build a refracting telescope, which will likely need a lot of expensive equipment, which may not be accessible easily.
If we look at how to build a telescope, which is of the reflecting type, you will find that it comes with a few parts. You have the tripod, the mount, the telescope tube (that houses the telescope optics), the mirror, and the secondary mirrors.
Now, if you build a telescope, you will find that you can do as much or as little as you want. You could always buy all the parts, and build the telescope, kind of like a computer or you could make a mirror yourself, and get all the other parts. And you could even build the whole thing from scratch!
The only issue is time. As you build a telescope, and decide to build the whole telescope, then you will find that it could cost much more than buying a telescope that is new. However, if you are looking to build a telescope, you are likely building for the opportunity of being able to build your own telescope, and have fun doing and using it.
If you are thinking of building a telescope, all by yourself, I strongly suggest against it. There are some parts that will require the aid of others. For example, you can cut and polish the mirror, however, adding the silver film which makes the glass into a mirror, is something best left to professionals.
Likewise, the actually lenses, are generally best to be purchased, rather that making them yourself. Equipment to make any kind of optical lenses is expensive, and requires a lot of knowledge about optics.
Your biggest concern and thought will likely come down to the size of the mirror. Reflector telescopes have mirrors which range in size of only a few inches, right up to over 10", in most amateur telescopes, such as Meade, Celestron and Orion.
If you are building a telescope, and plan to make the mirror, I strongly suggest you select a mirror size that is bigger than 4", but no larger than 8". This will allow you to get a reasonable telescope, which won't require a long time to make, and provides a safe way for success. |
