Although every pump out system is different, in general the idea is the same. For first timers, the task can seem a little daunting. Here is what you need to know to make sure that starting with your very first time, every time is successful and easy at the pump out station.

When it is time for you to pump out your boat for the very first time, it is important to relax! It really isnt any more difficult than pumping gasoline into your car. However, until you feel absolutely comfortable with everything, ask for help! Even though it isnt any more complicated than at the pump at a gas station, the machinery and the systems do vary somewhat. For the most part, the pump out systems have simple instructions in visible places on the pump, but if not, you can always ask a manager or deck staff person to post them, or at least give you a copy. Sometimes, depending on the place, the dock staff might pump out the tank for you. If they do offer to do this, however, dont walk away and let them do it without you; the best way for you to learn is to be active and take part in the pump out, too.

The first thing that you are going to want to do when you are ready to pump out your boat is to unscrew the cap from your boats deck waste fitting. Take the pump out hose nozzle and insert it into your deck fitting. Sometimes, you might need an adapter to have the pieces all fit together, and marinas more than likely will have those available. If you dont want to go hunting down adapters every time you pump out, you can also buy them in boat stores. Next, turn on the pump. If there is a hose valve, make sure you open it to start the suctioning, or you may be there all day long, wondering why nothing is happening.

Keep an eye on the boats waste level while you are using the docks pump out system. When no more waste is visible through your sight glass, you can then close the valve on the hose and remove it from your deck fitting. You really should also flush your pump out hose with water for at least 15 seconds when you are done; with the valve open, submit the hose in a bucket of water to rinse the hose. You can also rinse your boats waste tank with water, and then pump dry.

After the pump out has been done and your hose has been flushed with water, with your valve closed, make sure you either turn the pump off if it is asked of you to do so. Some pumps are on timers so you wont need to worry about this. Finally, make sure you replace your deck fitting cap, and you are good to go! It only takes a few little steps to have success when you are at a pump out station with your boat, and remember to ask for help if you need it!
