It seems like every single day there is a new virus being created by individuals that can completely destroy are hard drives or just plain old annoy us. A few years back I ran into one of these hefty little problems while downloading something on a trusted or supposedly trusted site. It seems that even though it was a trustworthy site, a hacker had "cracked" the site and installed a virus which enabled anyone visiting that site or downloading from that site to be infected. It was absolutely horrific and was one of the reasons why I had to reformat my entire drive! It's really important for people to not only familiarize themselves with virus but to also make sure they have the correct software downloaded on their computer.

One of the main reasons it's a good idea to do this before your caught unprotected is because there is a great chance that once you are infected you will not be able to get the infected file off of your computer, instead it will fry your hard drive and you won't even be able to do something as simple as turning it on.

The following steps are ones you should take when owning a computer, have it be old or new, expensive or inexpensive. Virus have many capabilities such as causing permanent damage, and even stealing information off of your computer, information about you that you would rather keep private such as name, address, phone numbers and yes even credit card and banking information! This is definitely not something you would want in other peoples hands, so take heed where and when you can!

1. Utilize an anti virus program at all times.

2. Set Up and sustain an active firewall.

3. Make sure your system is up-to-date with all the existing updates.

4. Keep your browsers security system settings at maximum.

5. Never click yes when your web browser asks you if you want to install or open content coming from an administration you don't know or don't trust.

6. Set Up an anti-spyware program to enlarge the protection.

7. Never install a browser help or search bar accept for when it comes from a reliable source.

8. Use a unique credit card for online shopping.

9. Don't click on email attachments that are executable files when it's from someone you don't know! Or better yet download a program which will work side by side with you email program!

Also, I really wanted to touch base with the updates. Just because you have software on your computer does not mean you are protected infinitely, you need to update whenever the program asks you to. This will allow new virus definitions to be downloaded to your computer and to the program, which will allow the program to "pick up" new virus's you may have received.

If you don't update and you have received Trojan Ice on your computer, and the virus definition is unknown to your program, then when it scans your computer it will never even know anything is wrong! I know it can be annoying sometimes because it usually takes UP to several minutes for updates, but they are there for your benefit and to help you!

I'm sure your next question is; "how do I know which programs to use"? Well in most cases you can easily find sites online that offer reviews and downloads, but make sure you can trust these sites! Depending on what sort of virus you have, Trojan, or otherwise there is a specific chosen program for each one. For example, if you have found problems in your registry files it's a good idea to use something like Reg-cure Free which offers you the ability to perform an automatic repair of detected items after a scan. You can configure the settings so that a repair of detected items occurs after each scan.

Backup and restore: An automatic backup is created every time you use Reg-Cure. You can also have the option to restore items at any given time. This is the type of program you want, not only will it protect you and your computer but its also user-friendly and allows you to control the program. It's always a good idea to make sure the program has some sort of a restore point in case you accidentally delete something you shouldn't have! Lastly, most programs are completely free to download, some of them may have paid inclusions but this is more or less a donation type of option for the creator to be able to create upgrades for the program so that it can keep up with the latest threats!
