While many of us in the country are preparing our homes for the coming winter months that will be filled with rain, sleet, snow, and freezing weather, the poor souls who live in certain places in our western states are still dealing with wildfires that are threatening their homes and businesses. It is such a vast contrast from one side of our country to the other. It just goes to show how much difference there is in the climates we live in and the weird weather patterns we have experienced lately.

Wildfires are a way that nature has of clearing the land and it really does not become a big problem until they start nearing homes and businesses. It can be a terrible thing to know that you have done everything you can to prevent a fire in your home and then have to stand back and watch while one is slowly approaching your property and there is absolutely nothing that you can do.

Sometimes the wind will work against firefighters as they try to control and extinguish wildfires. When they are throwing everything they have at a fire and still it keeps growing and spreading, they can run out of options. The safest thing that can be done is to evacuate people from the area and struggle to keep the flames from reaching valuable property.

The value of property is a main concern for the people who live in these homes and run these businesses that can be affected when wildfires break out and encroach as close as fifty miles from highly inhabited areas like Los Angeles. Not that their homes are any more important than others, but the cost of the damage can be tremendous. These fires have threatened even some of the most famous people and this just goes to show that fire has no respect of persons.

Even when these wildfires do not make direct contact with a home, it can still cause damage. The nearness of the intense heat can cause siding and other outside home materials to be damaged even if the actual flames never touch them. They could still have to file an insurance claim in order to have things repaired like siding. Smoke is another side affect of nearby fires. It can cover a home with soot and siding, wood, natural stone, and windows will all have to be cleaned. Not only on the outside, but smoke and soot can find its way inside the home through vents, chimneys, and other openings.

Things inside the home might have to be cleaned and deodorized like draperies, furniture, walls, ceilings, and floors. The only way a home that does not actually get burned by a wildfire can escape this smoke damage is if the winds are blowing the smoke away from their home.
