Swatch watches entered the watch market in 1983. At that time, people only bought one or two watches at the most, one watch for everyday and the other watch for special occasions. This all changed when the Swatch watches came onto the scene.

Swatch watches were able to make a splash with their colorful appearance and inexpensive construction. Despite their inexpensive construction, the Swatch watch was built to last, which brought the watch many return customers. Being a Swiss watch, it was expected that the Swatch watch would be a good watch, it was just not as expensive as other watches. The name "Swatch" meant to signal that this was a second watch, one that was more casual and fun that the everyday or formal occasion watch.

The price and the colorful designs on the Swatch watches created a marketing sensation. People were buying several watches to match their different outfits and the company began to deliver specially designed collections to entice more customers. The Swatch company began pumping out irreverent designs for their multitude of young customers.

Eventually, Swatch executives began to ask artists to design small collections of the watches. These exclusive Swatch watches quickly became collector's items especially when the company only puts out a few hundred of each watch design. Even though the Swatch watch was relatively inexpensive to start, as soon as it becomes a highly desired collector's items, people will pay any price for their favorite Swatch watch.

Swatch watches are now recognized by some collector's as fashionable little icons of culture. Once considered cheap, disposable and flashy, the Swatch watch has serious fans who will pay a high price for the artistic and exclusive Swatch watches. Each Swatch collection can be considered exclusive since there are so little made of each collection.

The Swatch family of watches fall under four main branches. The Original Swatches and Swatch Skins have a plastic case surrounding the watch movement. The Swatch Skin was made to be thin. In fact, the original Swatch Skin watch was entered in the Guinness World Book of Records as the thinnest plastic watch in the world. The thin Skin watch is comfortable to wear since it is so lightweight in comparison to bulkier watches. The Irony Swatch watches have a metal case. The Swatch Beats are either plastic or metal, depending on the watch.

Swatch watches are made to be appealing to many segments of society. Swatch watches are also available with extra features and for special purposes. There are scuba diving Swatch watches that can be worn at different depths. Swatch even makes a watch that can connect to the Internet so that the wearer may access information about the news, weather and stock quotes.

Once an eighties iconic product, the Swatch watch has continued to provide fun watches into the new millennium. Swatch watches are valuable as retro watches and as new culturally relevant watches that keep ahead of the times in order to provide fashion statements that matter to the Swatch watch wearer.
