For a certainty there are some people who really enjoy driving in the rain. For the vast majority of us, quite the opposite is true. Driving during heavy rain can be a dangerous time to be on the road with other drivers especially during rush hour traffic in a crowded place. Driving in rainstorms is when it is essential that you have windshield wipers in good condition and tires that are in really good shape.

Water on the roadways can be so hazardous when it rains long enough for it to begin standing and making puddles on the pavement. It does not matter what type of back road, highway, or interstate you might be on, all wet roads have the potential for accidents to occur more easily. Many drivers do not take wet pavement nearly as seriously as they should. Making a reduction in speed in only sensible when there is a torrential down pour and you can barely see where you are going.

Since we sometimes do not have a fair warning when it could begin to rain heavily, it is very important to always know that your tires are balanced correctly. When the roads are wet you can actually be riding along on top of the water. This is commonly referred to as hydroplaning. Having well balanced tires with an adequate amount of tread on them can reduce hydroplaning and keep your car more firmly on the road.

Another time when the roadways are extremely dangerous is when there is freezing rain. Snow can be hard to drive in, but not nearly so hazardous as freezing rain and sleet. It is always recommended to stay at home if possible when the roads are icy, but we know that can be easier said than done. We have to get to work many times whether there is bad weather or not. During freezing rain is a good time to know your vehicle. Not all vehicles respond the same way to driving on water, snow, and ice.

When you must drive on slick roads, it is not only important to drive more slowly, but to brake more easily as well. This is why you always want to make sure there is as much distance as possible between you and a vehicle up ahead especially on ice. When trying to stop on ice, it can take you twice as long to come to a complete stop as it normally would.

Remember to look for black ice when you are driving on freezing roads at night. You can sneak up on it and go spinning out of control before you realize what has happened. Also remember that front wheel drive vehicles are easier to control on slick roads than rear wheel drive vehicles. Most importantly, always pay closer attention to your driving when roads are wet or freezing. This will be a benefit to your safety and to others on the road as well.
