Most people these days have had some exposure to ATVs, All Terrain Vehicles, 4 wheelers, quads... and their many names. Some are used for work but more and more they are being a part of sport and recreation. They are very diverse vehicles and as such appeal to a broad group of people.
Ironically, this activity has become a point of argument in many locations. The nature of the activity lends itself to the young because of the sometimes rough nature of riding one and because some adults feel that riders should be limited by a minimum age requirement. There are no hard and fast rules for the.
There have been legal cases where the court has ask the manufactures to publish recommended rider ages and to use engine size as the determining factor for each category. As an example some manufactures recommend that 70cc engines are for 12 years and older while 90cc engines would be appropriate for over 16. The problem with these recommended guidelines is that they are recommended guidelines not laws. Some groups feel these suggestions should have the added benefit of law to stop the younger riders from riding.
At this point in time the laws leave the responsibility in the hands of the rider or his guardian so it is vital that you take the time to stop and think about the ATV you are riding or renting so that it really fits you and your body. Your weight as well as your height can play a roll in determining what is right so be sure and try out several and see what feels right. Don't use aesthetic design as the sole determining factor.
Sport and Utility 4 wheelers have different designs that are made to accommodate different riding needs. Utility 4 wheelers usually have more built out bodies that will handle the tasks they are purchased for. Things like carrying loads and pulling are only the beginning along with more ridged suspension and styling that pronounce a workhorse image.
On the other end of the spectrum you have the Sporty All Terrain Vehicles. These are designed like their name states they are designed for fun, speed and entertainment. The shape and weight and strength are made to withstand completely different forces. The sport ATV doesn't need the torque to haul loads but they need quick takeoff and stopping ability and the ability to withstand rugged terrain at higher speeds.
No matter which style of ATV you choose the important thing to remember is that you must find one that not only fits your body but one that meets the expectations and purpose you have for the vehicle. Like any purchase don't make is on emotion and do your homework.
